Join us Sunday, March 3, 2024 at 6:30 pm at Beth Shalom Synagogue for a Kosher Gospel celebration with guest appearances from a Gospel Choir from Bible Way Church and Benedict College Gospel Choir. They will entertain us with traditional gospel numbers and will also collaborate and perform with Joshua in ways sure to surprise and engage the entire audience. Joshua Nelson coined the term “Kosher Gospel”—Hebrew/Jewish music with a soul feeling—to honor both parts of his identity as an African American Jew. A blend of Jewish Liturgical and African American musical styles, “Kosher Gospel” is a revolution in Jewish music, and Nelson is a pioneer of the form. Singing alongside stars such as Aretha Franklin and the Klezmatics, Joshua Nelson has been titled the “Next Big Thing” by Oprah.

When Nelson was just eight years old, he stumbled across a Mahalia Jackson album and instantly became entranced. Known as the Queen of Gospel, the late Mahalia Jackson has had a remarkable influence on Nelson’s voice and love for spiritual music. As he continues her legacy performing “Kosher Gospel” across the world, Joshua Nelson is transforming new listeners everywhere.

Nelson will also participate in Kabbalat Shabbat services and deliver a “Sermon in Song” during our Shabbat services on March 10 & 11, 2023.
