Instructions for Hagba and Gelila
(Lifting and Wrapping the Torah Scroll)
Hagba (Lifting the Torah):
- When called forward, take your place as directed in front of the Torah.
- The one lifting the Torah scroll steps up to the Torah Reading Table. It is customary to open the scroll so three columns are showing. Grasp the scroll by the atzei hayim (wooden handles) and pull it down until the middle of the scroll is on the edge of the table.
- Then push down on the atzei hayim, bringing the scroll almost hallway off the table, bend your knees slightly, and raise the scroll. Lift the Torah scroll and turn around so your back is to the congregation. Sit down where you are shown.
- Hold the Torah on your lap as the golel (one wrapping the scroll) rolls, wraps and ties the Torah.
- When the scroll is dressed, hand it to the designated person or place it where you are shown.
- Exit the bimah.
Gelila (Wrapping the Torah):
- When the mag-be’ah (Torah lifter) is seated, grasp the top atzei hayim (handles) and turn them together until the parchment is tight.
- Put the Torah belt around the scroll, about half-way down. The closure (clasp, velcro, etc.) should be where the scroll opens.
- Put the mantle over the scroll. The front of the mantle should be over the front of the scroll (where the scroll opens).
- Place the yad (pointer) over the handle to your left.
- Exit the bimah.
